What is Thyroid Disease ?
Thyroid disease refers to a group of conditions that affect the Thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck.
The thyroid plays a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions by producing hormones that control metabolism. Common thyroid disorders include hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).
What is Hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism is common disease in which there is inadequate production of Thyroid hormones, T3 and T4 hormones which are produced by the Thyroid gland which is a small butterfly-shaped gland situated in front of the neck.
What are the functions of Thyroid hormones ?
Thyroid hormones mainly regulate the metabolism in our body.
It maintains the Basal Metabolic Rate, which is a process that involves transferring the food we eat to its conversion into energy.
- To maintain the growth of the body
- To maintain the heart rate
- To maintain the body temperature
- Skin and bone growth and many more functions.
What are the causes of Hypothyroidism?
- Inadequate Iodine Intake
- Increased demand for Thyroid hormones
- Inadequate production of Thyroid hormones
- Autoimmune Thyroid diseases like Hashimoto thyroiditis
What are the signs and symptoms of Hypothyroidism?
- Physical and mental inactivity
- Fatigue weakness
- Weight gain
- Decreased appetite

What are the tests required to Diagnose hypothyroidism?

How my Thyroid Medicine will work?
Thyroid Medication contains Thyroxine hormone. The Thyroxine hormone in the medicine will get absorbed from the stomach to the blood and it functions as a Thyroxine hormone. This hormone will maintain the normal feedback loop mechanism.
Why Thyroid Medicine should be taken early morning 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast?
Thyroid medication should be taken empty stomach because when we take tea/coffee/breakfast, the absorption of Thyroid tablets in the stomach may be decreased in the presence of Calcium, Iron, and Food.
So, to maintain the effectiveness of Thyroid tablets its always prescribed to take this medicine early morning on an empty stomach.
What happens if I miss my Thyroid tablet?
Don’t worry when you notice you have missed your dose. Take it as soon as possible.
If too much time has passed just skip that dose and take next dose in morning.
What are the side-effects of Thyroxine tablet ?
- Heat intolerance
- Diarrhea
- Increased heart rate
Why does swelling/Goitre appear in the neck?
When there are decreased levels of T3 and T4 hormones, the production of TSH hormone is stimulated by the brain.
TSH hormones stimulate the growth of the Thyroid gland and when it’s associated with inadequate intake or decreased availability of Iodine in the diet, only the Thyroid gland grows in size and the production of T3 T4 hormones remains the same.
What are the Compression symptoms of thyroid gland swelling?
When the Thyroid gland increases in size, it causes compression on nearby structures.
- Difficulty in breathing due to Compression on the trachea ( Breathing tube )
- Difficulty in swallowing due to Compression on the esophagus ( Food pipe)
- Hoarseness of voice due to compression of recurrent laryngeal nerve
- Venous engorgement in the neck due to blood vessel compression
These symptoms are Red flag signs and should be shown to a Thyroid specialist doctor immediately.
I don't have any signs and symptoms of Hypothyroidism then why my TSH is high?
The level of T3 T4 and TSH hormones in the Blood are regulated by a feedback loop mechanism.
When there is decreased production of T3 T4 hormones in the Thyroid gland then decreased levels of T3 T4 send signals to the brain ( to the hypothalamus a part of the brain ).
This will in-turn stimulate the pituitary gland to secret the TSH hormone (Thyroid-stimulating hormone ) which will signal the Thyroid gland to increase the production of T3 T4 hormone.
When T3 T4 hormones are in abundance then TSH production automatically decreases via feedback loop mechanism.
Can my Thyroid tablet be stopped completly?
When the T3 T4 and TSH levels are normal for a longer time then a dose of the Thyroid tablet can be reduced slowly.
With continuous monitoring of T3 T4 TSH levels Thyroid tablet can be stopped providing Euthyoid status is maintained.
